UR Huye Handball Teams Miss Out on Liberation Cup 2026 After Varsity League Success

The University of Rwanda (UR) Huye Campus men's and women's handball teams did not secure a place in the 2026 Liberation Cup after losing their first matches. The tournament came just weeks after both teams won the Varsity League title in June.
The tournament took place on 3 and 4 July 2026 at Nyamirambo pitch and at Kimisagara Maison des Jeunes. The Liberation Cup is an annual multi-sport tournament organized by the Rwanda Defence Force to celebrate Rwanda's Liberation Day (Kwibohora) on 4 July.
After becoming Varsity League champions, UR Huye hand ball team’s men and women entered the Liberation Cup to compete against some of Rwanda's top handball clubs.
On 3 July, the UR Huye men's team played against APR HC in their first match. They lost 45–23 to APR HC, one of the strongest handball clubs in Rwanda and the eventual Liberation Cup champions.
In their second match, UR Huye lost 21–20 to Gorilla HC. The defeat ended the team's chance of competing for third place in the tournament.
On 4 July, the UR Huye women's team also lost both of their matches. They were defeated 31–7 by the University of Kigali (UK) and later lost 26–8 to Gorilla HC.
Although neither the men's nor the women's team secured a place in the competition, the UR Huye men's team finished the tournament with a Fair Play match against Nasho HC, which they won 28 – 13scores.
In the men's final, APR HC won the 2026 Liberation Cup after defeating Police HC 4–2 on penalties following a 32–32 draw in regular time.
In the women's final, the University of Kigali (UK) won the Liberation Cup by defeating Gorilla HC 30–28.
