UR Huye handball teams have been eliminated from the Genocide Memorial Handball Tournament (GMT 2026) after a challenging campaign at Amahoro Petit Stade in Kigali.
The annual tournament officially got underway on June 5, bringing together some of the strongest university and club handball teams from Rwanda and the region.
UR Huye men's team began their campaign against Police HC on the opening day but suffered a 43-26 defeat. The result left the team with a difficult task heading into their second group-stage match.
On June 6, UR Huye faced Uganda's Ndejje University in a must-win encounter. Despite showing determination throughout the match, the Huye-based side fell 43-27, bringing their tournament journey to an end.
The women's team also faced a tough challenge in Kigali. In their opening match, UR Huye women lost 27-22 to UR Rukara in a closely contested game. Later in the day, they took on Kiziguro but were unable to match their opponents' intensity, suffering a 43-12 defeat.
Following the results, both the men's and women's teams were eliminated from GMT 2026 at the group stage.
While the campaign ended earlier than anticipated, the tournament offered valuable exposure and experience for the UR Huye players against quality opposition from Rwanda and the region. The teams will now shift their focus to future competitions as they seek to build on the lessons learned from this year's tournament.
Meanwhile, the tournament concluded with Police HC being crowned champions in the men's category after defeating APR HC in the final, while Kiziguro claimed the women's title with a victory over TSS Nyamagabe. The successful conclusion of GMT 2026 marked the end of several days of competitive handball action, bringing together teams from across Rwanda and the region in both remembrance and sporting excellence.
